One of my favorite wedding DIY projects was this custom mosaic tile name sign. It ended up being one of the most photographed details from our wedding weekend, and it was surprisingly simple to make with a little patience.
If you'd like to create your own, here's the process I followed.
Step 1: Create Your Name Stencil
While you can freehand your design, I recommend creating a stencil first. I printed my chosen font, traced it, and lightly transferred the outline onto my board. This helped keep the lettering clean and evenly spaced throughout the project.
Step 2: Start with the Lettering
Begin with the name or main design element before moving to the background. The lettering requires the most precision, so it's easier to build the rest of the piece around it.
Work in small sections, applying adhesive as you go and placing tiles directly onto the outlined letters. If a tile is too large or doesn't fit a curve properly, use tile clippers to trim it to the desired shape.
Step 3: Fill in the Background
Once the lettering is complete, begin filling in the surrounding space.
For my sign, I used a combination of white and pearlescent tiles to add dimension and subtle texture. Mixing tile finishes can create a beautiful, custom look without adding complexity to the design.
Step 4: Allow Everything to Dry
Before grouting, make sure all tiles are fully adhered and the adhesive has completely dried according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 5: Apply Grout
Once dry, spread grout over the entire surface, working it into all of the gaps between the tiles. After the grout begins to set, use a damp sponge to wipe away the excess and reveal your design.
This is the stage where the project really comes together.
